I started my candle business during one of the most emotionally raw seasons of my life. And while it’s now one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done, I also made a LOT of mistakes along the way. Some cost time. Others cost money. And a few? Well, they cost me peace of mind.

So, whether you're launching from your kitchen table or dreaming up a full-blown brand, here are the top mistakes to avoid when starting your candle business from scratch—so you can start smarter and stress less.

❌ Mistake #1: Skipping Product Testing

I know—you're excited to sell. But don’t rush it.

Testing your candles (over and over again) is non-negotiable. You need to know:

• Does the wick burn evenly?

• Is the scent strong enough—but not overpowering?

• Does the candle tunnel or mushroom?

• Is it safe for different jar types?

👉 Avoid it: Test every single combo—wax, wick, fragrance, and vessel—before going live. Safety matters.

❌ Mistake #2: Choosing Scents You Love, Not What Sells

Your nose knows best… or does it? 😅

When I first started, I only picked scents I personally adored (hi, patchouli + lavender!)—but my customers didn’t always agree. Turns out, vanilla, citrus, and clean linen were my bestsellers.

👉 Avoid it: Do scent market research. Check Etsy trends. Ask your audience. The goal is to serve their senses, not just yours.

❌ Mistake #3: Underpricing (Oof, This One Hurts)

I get it—you want to be affordable and kind. But underpricing can sink you fast.

You’re not just selling wax in a jar. You’re selling:

• Time

• Ingredients

• Branding

• Packaging

• Energy ...and your creativity.

👉 Avoid it: Calculate every cost, then price for profit. You can be heart-centered and business-savvy.

❌ Mistake #4: Waiting Too Long to Build a Brand

At first, I didn’t think I was a brand. I was “just making candles.” Sound familiar?

But your brand is what people remember. It's your story, your vibe, your message. It’s why someone chooses yourcandle over a big-box store’s.

👉 Avoid it: Choose a name, color palette, vibe, and mission early on. Even a simple Canva logo is a great start. Build as you grow.

❌ Mistake #5: Trying to Be Everywhere, All at Once

Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, Etsy, Shopify, farmer’s markets... whew. Trying to do it all will burn you out faster than an unscented tealight.

👉 Avoid it: Pick one or two platforms to focus on. For me, it was Instagram and my website. Do them well, then expand.

❌ Mistake #6: Not Having a Story

Candles are everywhere. What makes yours different?

For me, the difference was grief. My candles weren’t just decor—they were healing tools. They carried intention, memory, and light for others who had lost someone.

👉 Avoid it: Find your “why.” Whether it's sustainability, scent nostalgia, or spiritual grounding—let people feel something when they buy from you.

❌ Mistake #7: Thinking You Need to Have It All Figured Out

I started with a few jars, some wax I melted in a double boiler, and a whole lot of trial and error. There’s no perfect launch day. Just a brave beginning.
